So today I turn 24, and it felt like just yesterday I was celebrating my 21st birthday; a hopeful 21-year-old with dreams for the future. But before I turn into Debbie Downer, here are 24 things I've learned along the way and notes to myself. I can't say that I've learnt a lot, but definitely enough to change my perception on many things. Well, change is the only constant right?
1. Treat every experience as a lesson and learn from it. The good, the bad, when pieced together makes life LIFE. It's not fun without a little challenge, is it?
2. Everyone goes through a period, and we can all go a little mad sometimes. Nobody has their shit together all the time, and you don't have to.
3. You are never alone, even if it seems like it. Please remember that there will always be someone thinking of you, someone who cares and loves you.
4. Our priorities and perspectives do change overtime. When I was 14 I had a different way of viewing things, but now at 24, I am struggling to cope with life while crippled by my existential crisis. Can't wait for when I turn 26 and look back at this post.
5. Find the silver lining in everything. There are dark times, but there's also the light at the end of the tunnel. Hold on.
6. Take chances. Don't be afraid to fail, keep trying until you've tried your best. Sometimes plans just don't go the way you hope, learn to pick yourself up after you've fallen.
7. Do things that ignite your soul, not things that dampen it. You only got one life, live it well and you only need to live it once.
8. Stop making excuses for people and yourself. It is not your duty to justify someone else's actions, if they are bad then they are bad. Neither should you short change yourself and prevent yourself from achieving the best by giving excuses. How good you want to be truly depends on you.
9. Gratitude. Go beyond just being thankful, have a deeper appreciation for situations, things or people.
10. The world is both beautiful and ugly, pick a side. I don't mean to become oblivious to whatever's happening. Rather, acknowledge it, move on or do something about it. Which brings me to my next point.
11. Be the change you want to see in this world. "Not all of us can do great things. but we can do small things with great love."
“Don't hope for a life without problems. There's no such thing. Instead, hope for a life full of good problems.”
12. Life becomes meaningless without a goal, harsh but true. What is my purpose in life, what are my goals? It takes time to discover these. Just remember not to compare yourself with others, we exist on our on time and space. Just because it hasn't happened to you yet doesn't mean it never will.
13. Lose yourself so that you can find yourself. Allow yourself to be free, start afresh, look at things from a different perspective and open yourself to new discoveries. Being lost is just another opportunity to find yourself.
14. Stop caring about what people think, or will think about you. No matter what you do, someone is going to judge so what the heck?
15. Give yourself a break. Don't be so hard on yourself, you are already doing your best. Everyday is a new day with new challenges that you're figuring out for the first time.
16. Stop stressing yourself out over the little things. So many things are out of our control but I have to admit, as someone who can't deal with uncertainty it freaks me out.
17. Realise that you deserve better. Close some doors even if you don't want to, because they no longer lead somewhere you wish to go.
18. Everyone has their own perspectives, their own take at life and that is okay.
19. Do what you love and love what you do may seem to have the same meaning, but really, I think there's a very slight difference. Do it with passion, or not at all.
20. Live your life exactly the way you want it, don't allow anybody to live your life for you. Be your own captain, sail your own course and find your own path. Learn to believe in yourself and create your own definition of "success", don't just follow what someone else wants you to be.
20. Live your life exactly the way you want it, don't allow anybody to live your life for you. Be your own captain, sail your own course and find your own path. Learn to believe in yourself and create your own definition of "success", don't just follow what someone else wants you to be.
“There is no right or wrong way to go through life. Ideas that are set by society are examples of the way it could be lived. The path that chooses you, or better yet, you choose, is a masterpiece of broken pieces mixed with confetti and balloons. Don’t compare your story with anyone else’s.”
21. Learn to embrace the uncertainty. It's okay to feel lost and unsure sometimes, it's part of the journey. Uncertainty will always be there, and so we should earn to work alongside rather than against it.
22. Learn something new. Whether it's another language, or a new skill, self development helps with to reconnect you with the universe.
23. Everything happens for a bloody reason. A corny, overused phrase no doubt, but one that I resonate with. There's a time and place for everything, if it's not your time yet then it's not. The things that happened and didn't happen, the friends that left, the failed attempts, all of which helped shaped and influenced my life.
Lastly, as difficult as it is, try to live in the moment. Being mindful and appreciating the little moments in life is something I've been trying to practice lately. So many days I live on auto-pilot mode, going through the same thing over and over again just to exist but am I really living? Some days my depressive tendencies get the better of me, and I forget to embrace the little things. Today is the oldest you've ever been and the youngest you'll ever be again.
I really don't know what the future holds, or how old I will live but I hope the coming years would be meaningful. I hope everyone finds the light in their life and dare to chase their dreams. Remember that under the stars, there's a place for everyone so go find a place you truly belong. As always, stay gold my friends!
Stay gold, xx
